Formula Master heads to Portugal
The Formula Master season is fast approaching its halfway point with rounds seven and eight set to take place at the Circuito do Estoril in Portugal on 12 and 13 July 2008. As one of two new tracks on the Formula Master calendar this year, Estoril retains an element of unknown for the Series' drivers. Although testing took place there earlier this year, none of the young racers have driven their Formula Master single-seaters competitively around the circuit.

Jenzer Motorsport's Fabio Leimer proved fastest on both test days, claiming an overall fastest time of 1:31.843. While the young Swiss' pace has failed to translate into a win so far, his speed at Estoril indicates that next weekend could be his chance.

"The car felt really good when we were there last time," said Leimer who scored his first Formula Master podium last May in Valencia. "It's great in the corners. The circuit is pretty unique; Valencia is probably the only other track on this year's calendar that shares similarities with Estoril so that's promising for me!"

Drivers Classification leader Chris van der Drift will be looking to extend his lead over second-placed man Michael Ammermüller, the only driver to score points in all races so far. The New Zealand-born Dutchman holds 34 points to Ammermüller's 30 and hopes to increase the gap as much as possible.

"I'll definitely be watching how Ammermüller is doing," said van der Drift. "Normally by the time the qualifying session starts you have a fair idea on how fast your competitors are, so you know what you need to do!

"Testing at Estoril will have been helpful for everyone, considering that this is a new track for the Series but you drive a lot by yourself during tests. Driving the circuit will be familiar already and we'll know the braking points but until you actually race, you're not going to know where the good places to pass are or how close you can drive to someone else."

Eurosport's coverage for Formula Master's race weekend in Portugal, will begin Saturday 12 July with race one shown live at 13:00 (CET) on Eurosport International and Asia Pacific. Sunday's race two will be broadcast live on Eurosport 2 and Asia Pacific at 16:30 (CET).
Schlegelmilch claims first victory
Harald Schlegelmilch claimed his and Trident Racing´s first Formula Master victory today in Brno, Czech Republic, after leading the race from start to finish.

The 20-year-old Latvian started from pole due to the Series' reverse grid regulations, after finishing yesterday's round in eighth place, and kept the lead throughout the 19-lap race despite strong pressure from Cram Competition's Pablo Sanchez Lopez.

Sanchez Lopez enjoyed a good start, making up a place in passing ADM Motorsport's Norbert Siedler, but was unable to pass Schlegelmilch for the lead and finished in second place: his first podium of the season, along with Cram Competition's.

Siedler completed today's podium with his second top-three finish of the year, in third place. Michael Ammermüller climbed to a fourth place finish for Iris Project after starting the race in seventh with JD Motorsport's Chris van der Drift close behind in fifth. The pair made up several places at the start of the race, proceeding to pressurise Siedler for third place to no avail.

Van der Drift's team-mate Sergey Afanasiev claimed sixth place, whilst Kasper Andersen eventually clinched seventh for Trident Racing despite running as high as fourth earlier in the race.

ISR's Tim Sandtler raced to an eighth place finish, making up two positions during the 45-minute race and earning his first Drivers Classification point of the season.

The safety car was deployed early in the race following an incident involving Cram Competition's Alberto Costa and ADM Motorsport team-mates Octavio Freitas and Michele Caliendo on lap one.

Schlegelmilch earned 'best rookie' of the race along with his race victory, which also ensured Trident Racing received the 'best team-mates' honours for Schlegelmilch and Andersen.

Five different teams claimed the top five finishing positions today, highlighting Formula Master's close competition, whilst van der Drift increased his title lead to four points ahead of Ammermüller.

Harald Schlegelmilch, Trident Racing
"It was a good race. I'm very pleased with the result. Now you see me smiling and hopefully the next round will also be a smiley race!

"The start was very good, the best in Formula Master this year. After the safety car, I just slowed down a little bit at the restart and tried to get away from the guys as quick as possible. I managed to make a good gap in the first laps but Sanchez Lopez was coming very fast and I was lucky to keep him behind."

Pablo Sanchez Lopez, Cram Competition
"Harald did a good job; I have to congratulate him. I'm very happy for the team; I think we have found good car balance. We were a little bit lost at the start of the season but now I feel happy; it's good for the team and it's good for me. I know the team has a good car and I think we can go through the season and fight for the title."

Norbert Siedler, ADM Motorsport
"The race was not so easy as I had to defend third place but I did it and that is good for the title and for our points. Qualifying was pretty bad; I was 16th so third place from 16th is pretty good. It hasn't been a bad weekend for me!"

Top finishes for JD Motorsport
Round five for Formula Master saw JD Motorsport clinch first and third place today in Brno, Czech Republic with Chris van der Drift claiming the win and team-mate Vladimir Arabadzhiev securing third place..

New Zealand-born Dutchman van der Drift led the 14-lap race from start to finish, after qualifying on pole yesterday, although Euronova Racing's Yuhi Sekiguchi followed closely for the majority of the race

The Japanese driver enjoyed a great start, passing Iris Project's Michael Ammermüller and Jenzer Motorsport's Fabio Leimer for second place, before retiring out of the race on lap ten due to a fuel-related issue to his team's desperation.

Having regained his position from Leimer on lap two, Sekiguchi's retirement left Ammermüller free to race to the chequered flag in second place, whilst Arabadzhiev took third from a fifth place starting position.

Leimer eventually finished in fourth with Trident Racing's Kasper Andersen claiming fifth place. Cram Competition's Pablo Sanchez Lopez made the most of a first lap incident involving his team-mate Arturo Llobell and ISR's Filip Salaquarda, and climbed from P12 to seventh place before the safety car was brought out. Sanchez Lopez went on to finish the race in sixth place.

Norbert Siedler, driving for ADM Motorsport, also made up several places on lap one. The Austrian started the race in P15 but was up in tenth place by the time the safety car came out. Siedler eventually finished in seventh place.

Completing today's top eight finishers, Trident Racing's Harald Schlegelmilch starts tomorrow's race on pole thanks to Formula Master's reverse grid regulations.

Whilst JD Motorsport safely secured the best team-mates honours with van der Drift's victory and Arabadzhiev's third place, Ammermüller claimed 'best rookie' of the race.

Eurosport's coverage of Formula Master's race weekend in Brno, Czech Republic, continues tomorrow with Race two broadcast on Eurosport 2 at 18:00 (CET).

Chris van der Drift, JD Motorsport
"I had some pressure from Sekiguchi, especially after the safety car period but kept the lead and the race was straight forward after that. It's good to get points today, the aim is to keep scoring as many as possible in each round.

"For tomorrow, the start will be the most important part of the race. We'll be fast for sure. I'm starting in eighth place so I'll just have to make sure we overtake everyone else in front!"

Michael Ammermüller, Iris Project
"The start was not too good. I came away a bit slow and lost two positions. I managed to get one back from Leimer because he went into the gravel slightly. Vladimir was quite quick at the end, but I am very happy to finish second."

Vladimir Arabadzhiev, JD Motorsport
"In the race we were quite unfortunate as I had to start fifth because of my penalty; my qualifying position would have been third. I was some time behind Leimer because it's very difficult to overtake in a fast corner as the car can under-steer and there is not enough grip to overtake. But during the race, the car and the team were very good."
[Note: Arabadzhiev's best qualifying time was cancelled for improving his time under yellow flags during free practice.]

Front row start for van der Drift
Round five for Formula Master will start tomorrow with JD Motorsport´s Chris van der Drift on the front row after the 22-year-old clinched pole with a 1:47.050 lap in today´s qualifying session. Having set a fastest lap early in the 30-minute session with a best time of 1:48.759, van der Drift broke into the 1:47s once the session was restarted following a red flag caused by Trident Racing's Alejandro Nuñez going off-track at Turn 3.

Iris Project's Michael Ammermüller will start alongside van der Drift in tomorrow's race after setting a best time of 1:47.944 whilst Jenzer Motorsport's Fabio Leimer completes the top three with his fastest lap: 1:48.425.

Arturo Llobell, driving for Cram Competition, was fourth fastest and set a best time of 1:48.542 with Euronova Racing's Yuhi Sekiguchi in fifth, completing his best lap in 1:48.631.

JD Motorsport's Vladimir Arabadzhiev qualified in sixth place with a time of 1:48.682 ahead of Trident Racing team-mates Harald Schlegelmilch and Kasper Andersen who will start the race in seventh and eighth place respectively.

With a fastest lap good enough for fourth place, Schlegelmilch's best time was disallowed, along with four other drivers', for improving their times under yellow flags in free practice earlier today. JD Motorsport's Vladimir Arabadzhiev, Pro Motorsport's Marcello Puglisi, ADM Motorsport's Norbert Siedler, Scuderia Famá's Luca Persiani and Schlegelmilch all had their best time cancelled.

National Czech drivers Filip Salaquarda, driving for ISR, and Team JVA's Josef Kral will start tomorrow's race in ninth and 13th place respectively.

Eurosport's coverage for Formula Master's race weekend in the Czech Republic, will begin Saturday 14 June with race one shown live at 12:15 (CET) on Eurosport International and Asia Pacific. Race two will be broadcast on Eurosport 2 at 18:00 (CET).

Chris van der Drift, JD Motorsport
"The first half went alright but I knew we could improve. I didn't get the best lap on that set of tyres so I was looking for a good result on the second outing. I knew we were quick directly after warming up new tyres but then the session was red flagged after two laps! As soon as the lights went green I went out and got it. I was so pleased."

Michael Ammermüller, Iris Project
"We were unlucky actually. It's the same as Valencia; we know we are faster but had traffic on our fast laps. On my second set of tyres, the red flag was called just as I was on my fast lap. After that, I couldn't push as much as I wanted... I'm sure we can go quicker!"

Fabio Leimer, Jenzer Motorsport
"It wasn't so bad, but at the moment we are losing too much time. The biggest issue is to find the perfect set-up for the car. I have been consistent before, but this time I have made a few mistakes. We will watch the data and work out where we can gain more."
Continued speed for van der Drift
JD Motorsport´s Chris van der Drift continued his free practice form in today´s second session by setting the fastest time of 1:48.011.

Iris Project's Michael Ammermüller posted the second best time with a lap of 1:48.476 whilst Fabio Leimer, driving for Jenzer Motorsport, set the third fastest lap of the session (1:48.606).

Free practice one: VAN DER DRIFT FASTEST IN MORNING FREE PRACTICE

This morning’s Formula Master free practice session in Brno, Czech Republic, saw JD Motorsport’s Chris van der Drift set the fastest time with a best lap of 1:48.427.

Iris Project’s Michael Ammermüller posted the morning’s second fastest time, 1:49.080, whilst Yuhi Sekiguchi’s best lap of 1:49.309 earned him third fastest for Euronova Racing.
Van der Drift tops Brno timesheets
JD Motorsport’s Chris van der Drift set the day’s fastest time with a best lap of 1:48.610 in Brno, Czech Republic, for today’s official Formula Master test. Posting his time during the afternoon session, the New Zealand-born Dutchman was 0.338 ahead of second best Michael Ammermüller, driving for Iris Project.

With over four seconds improvement on last year’s best time, this weekend’s racing looks set to be intense with van der Drift, Ammermüller and Jenzer Motorsport’s Fabio Leimer all showing strong pace throughout today’s test.

“The track feels really different from last year with the new surfacing,” said van der Drift who currently leads the Drivers Classification by three points. “There was no rubber on the track this morning, which made it quite slippery but as the day went on and more rubber was laid on; it got better and better.

“It’s a very fast track anyway; the corners tend to flow into one another and there is no chicane to slow down for, which is great to drive on. Friday should be even better for free practice and qualifying because more cars will have driven on the circuit between now and then.”

Ammermüller’s best lap of the morning, a 1:50.374, was closely followed by van der Drift (1:50.490) and Leimer who posted a best time of 1:50.698.

This afternoon’s session saw van der Drift set the fastest lap with a time of 1:48.610. Ammermüller was second, posting a best lap of 1:48.948, whilst third-placed man Leimer completed his best lap of the session in 1:49.452.

Formula Master’s race meeting in Brno will resume on Friday with two free practice sessions and qualifying, followed by race one on Saturday and race two on Sunday.

Czech time for Formula Master
Formula Master now heads to the Czech Republic for round five and six on 14 and 15 June 2008 at the Automotodrom Brno, and with yet more rain predicted for the weekend, exciting racing can be expected. Whilst 2007 saw Jérôme D'Ambrosio claim both wins with current Drivers Classification leader Chris van der Drift taking two third places, this year could see more varied results with several drivers contending for podium finishes.

All three JD Motorsport and Trident Racing drivers have already featured on the podium so far this year and are strong contenders for this weekend's races. Home talent shouldn't be discounted either in the shape of Czech team ISR and its Prague-born driver Filip Salaquarda, as well as Hradec Králové-based Josef Kral.

"Knowing the track is a definite advantage and I've raced at Brno many times," said Kral who lives 170km away and drives for Team JVA. "It's great to have family and friends at the race as well, it makes it very special. But in order to be competitive, you have to shut them out to some extent and treat the race like any other! Otherwise you put a lot of pressure on yourself.

"It's very hot in Czech Republic at the moment and it would be great to have that kind of weather during the races but conditions can change easily. In terms of challenges, there is a new track surface, which might affect the way we race. Otherwise, some corners are very important; there is an uphill chicane which you have to be quick in otherwise it affects a large part of the lap afterwards."

As Formula Master prepares for its Czech rounds, which starts with an official testing session on 11 June, the Formula Master Italy season began last weekend with the Series' first rounds in Vallelunga. Euronova Racing's Yuhi Sekiguchi claimed the inaugural victory whilst JD Motorsport's Vladimir Arabadzhiev took the win in race two.
Exciting win for Puglisi
Pro Motorsport’s Marcello Puglisi took his first Formula Master victory of the season today in a thrilling street race, which saw the Italian spin out on track as the race was red-flagged following a huge downpour in Pau, France. The 22-year-old led from start to finish, despite two safety car periods which prevented him from building up any lead from second placed-man Kasper Andersen. With rain beginning to fall heavily on lap 23, Puglisi spun out towards the ever-present barriers, along with several other cars, just as the race was suspended due to the weather.

Despite a strong start, Trident Racing’s Andersen was unable to pass Puglisi throughout the 35-minute race and kept his second place starting position for the duration.

Team-mate Alejandro Nüñez clinched third place, ahead of Cram Competition’s Arturo Llobell in fourth, after overtaking him following the race’s second safety car period.

Iris Project’s Michael Ammermüller maintained his fifth place grid position throughout the 25-lap race, surviving contact with Llobell and a close battle with sixth-place finisher and Cram Competition driver Pablo Sanchez Lopez.

Austrian Norbert Siedler was also one of the drivers spinning out in the rain in today’s exciting race ending, finishing seventh for ADM Motorsport, after surviving a three-way fight with JD Motorsport team-mates Sergey Afanasiev and Vladimir Arabdzhiev on lap one.

Euronova Racing’s Fabrizio Crestani claimed eighth place, managing to successfully defend his position against Drivers Classification leader Chris van der Drift (JD Motorsport) for the majority of the 23-lap race.

Trident Racing claimed best team-mates for today’s race with Andersen’s second place and Nüñez’s third place finish. This afternoon’s podium also earned Nüñez ‘best rookie of the day’, making him the fourth best rookie in as many races.

According to article 20 of the Formula Master sporting regulations, 75% of the original race distance must be completed by the leader for full points to be awarded. Since only 23 laps were completed in today’s race, half points will be awarded.

Van der Drift now leads the Drivers Classification by three points from Michael Ammermüller, whilst eight different nationalities are represented amongst the top eight drivers.

Marcello Puglisi, Pro Motorsport
“I’m very happy with the win. I managed to get a quick start from pole. I think Kasper might have got a better start than me but I had the best line. At the end, when it started raining, I made a mistake; I was very lucky that they decided to stop the race!

“Having to lead the restart after each safety car was a big problem. You never know when to get on the power to keep a space between you and second place but it worked out for me in the end.

“Now we head to Brno. We have a lot of work to do in testing before then, but I think my team can do a lot to the car and we can do even better there.”

Kasper Andersen, Trident Racing
“It’s very nice to be on the podium here today, as I had two crashes in Pau last year! I thought I almost had Puglisi at the start, but it was hard to see him. After that, I tried to race without fighting so that we could get away from the rest of the group.”

Alejandro Nüñez, Trident Racing
“At the restart, I kept close to Arturo Llobell but the track was so tight. It was very close but in the end I managed to pass him. I’m very happy as it’s my first podium; the team did a fantastic job.”

Russian win in Formula Master
Russian driver Sergey Afanasiev claimed his maiden Formula Master race win today in wet weather conditions in Pau, France, after 22 thrilling laps for round three of the Series. The JD Motorsport rookie started the race in second place behind team-mate Chris van der Drift and was promoted to the lead when van der Drift hit the barriers and retired on lap six.

ADM Motorsport’s Norbert Siedler finished the 35-minute race in second place, having had a fairly uneventful race despite the street circuit being extremely slippery. JD Motorsport’s Vladimir Arabadzhiev claimed his first podium finish of the season with third place.

Michael Ammermüller, driving for Iris Project, finished fourth with Trident Racing’s Alejandro Nüñez in fifth place, having successfully fended off team-mate Harald Schlegelmilch’s overtaking attempts during the race.

Despite passing Nüñez on lap nine, Schlegelmilch retired shortly after, following a spin at Turn 14.

Cram Competition’s Arturo Llobell claimed sixth place, despite a hard-fought battle with team-mate Pablo Sanchez Lopez in the earlier part of the race, which eventually saw Sanchez Lopez fall out of the leading eight drivers.

Trident Racing’s Kasper Andersen made up four places throughout the race to a seventh place finish, having started the race in 11th position, whilst Pro Motorsport’s Marcello Puglisi claimed the last point finish in eighth from 17th.

The honours for both best rookie and team-mates were claimed by JD Motorsport in today’s race, thanks to Afanasiev’s win and a third place finish for Arabadzhiev.

Eurosport's coverage for Formula Master's race weekend in Pau, France, continues tomorrow with race two broadcast live on Eurosport 2 and Asia Pacific at 14:00 (CET).

Sergey Afanasiev, JD Motorsport
“The race was interesting, the track was getting drier and drier and Norbert Siedler was making me go faster and faster! Near the end I had to overtake some of the lapped cars on the outside of a fast corner and I scrapped the wall. I think there was a little bit of damage but the result was really good. Really, I need to thank the team, as with two guys on the podium, we’re on top form.

“The weather forecast for tomorrow is heavy rain, so my aim is to stay on track and keep rolling. There are less opportunities to pass on this track than in Valencia, so we’ll have to see but I think we’ll do well.”

Norbert Siedler, ADM Motorsport
“The car was pushing a bit with understeer, but I set a quick lap time near the end. I practiced in Monte Carlo last week, as I also drive in the Porsche Supercup, which helped me a lot. The team did a great job and tomorrow I hope to be in the running for some points.”

Vladimir Arabazhiev, JD Motorsport
“In the beginning, I found the track very difficult, but I have been getting faster every time we practice. I’m very glad to be on the podium for the first time. At the start of the race I was having problems, as the weather conditions mean that if there is a car in front, you cannot see the track, especially your breaking point. But I think the result was very good.”

Pau pole for van der Drift
The streets of Pau, France, saw JD Motorsport driver Chris van der Drift claim pole position in today’s Formula Master qualifying session with a fastest time of 1:11.179. With the session divided into two sets of 14 cars, allowing the Formula Master drivers to set times without fear of traffic, van der Drift dominated the first group and improved his time throughout the session.

ADM Motorsport’s Norbert Siedler was second fastest in group one, setting his best time of 1:12.388 within seconds of the chequered flag and demoting Iris Project’s Michael Ammermüller and his best lap of 1:12.414 to third fastest.

Arturo Llobell, driving for Cram Competition, claimed the fourth best time in this evening’s first group with a lap of 1:12.493 and will start tomorrow’s race in seventh position. Due to the two-part qualification session, group one will align on the right-hand side of the grid whilst group two will be on the left side.

With the second group qualifying in intermittent wet weather conditions, JD Motorsport’s Sergey Afanasiev posted the fastest lap of the set, 1:12.515, and will begin tomorrow’s race in position two. Team-mate Vladimir Arabadzhiev qualified just 0.056 seconds behind with a time of 1:12.571, whilst Alejandro Nüñez was third fastest in this evening’s second qualifying group with a 1:12.659 lap for his team, Trident Racing.

Team-mate Harald Schlegelmilch claimed fourth fastest in the session with a best lap of 1:12.696 and will therefore start tomorrow’s race in eighth place.

Eurosport's coverage for Formula Master's race weekend in Pau, France, will begin Saturday 31 May with race one shown live at 12:15 (CET) on Eurosport 2 and Asia Pacific. Race two will be broadcast live on Eurosport 2 and Asia Pacific at 14:00 (CET).

Session One
Chris van der Drift, JD Motorsport
“I think this is the best fun I’ve had all day! This morning went well but I had to be careful as we didn’t want to crash but during qualifying I really pushed. It was a good time to go out, I didn’t get caught up in traffic and the time of the day favoured the track. There was good grip and the car was fast. On my best lap everything was balanced and just flowed. It was perfect.”

Norbert Siedler, ADM Motorsport
“I put on a new set of tyres and the first two laps after that were to warm them up. Then I did the lap; it was my first flying lap actually and I even had a driver in my way towards the end... It was a good lap but we could have been even better!”

Michael Ammermüller, Iris Project
“It’s a shame to have lost second position right at the end, especially since the track was feeling better and better. I had yellow flags on my last lap so who knows what could have been but tomorrow’s another day... We’ll see how the race goes.”

Session Two
Sergey Afanasiev, JD Motorsport
“Overall I’m very happy with the qualifying position but I think I could have done better. After we changed to the second set of tyres I made a mistake and scuffed the wall in turn one, which caused a push in the car. I kept my lap times consistent though, despite the traffic and rain and that’s good. The team did a fantastic job in the conditions and I am really happy for my team-mate, Vladimir Arabadzhiev.”

Vladimir Arabazhiev, JD Motorsport
“This was my first time on a street circuit, so it was very strange driving in such a tight space. But throughout practice and qualifying, my team-mates helped me and I continued to improve. I’m very glad to be at the front.”

Alejandro Nüñez, Trident Racing
“Qualifying was difficult, as when the rain came we were not sure what to do, especially after seeing some of the other drivers’ incidents. There was a thin film of water on the grid, but the track dried quickly. I’m happy qualifying third, but if I had improved by one tenth of a second, I could have been at the front. I’m hoping for a good result this weekend.”
Continued speed for JD Motorsport
Two JD Motorsport drivers were fastest in this afternoon’s Formula Master free practice with Chris van der Drift setting the best time of the session: 1:12.524. Team-mate Sergey Afanasiev posted the second fastest time with a lap of 1:13.060, whilst Cram Competition’s Arturo Llobell claimed the third best lap with a 1:13.077 time.

Free practice one: VAN DER DRIFT FASTEST IN FIRST FRENCH PRACTICE

JD Motorsport´s Chris van der Drift set this morning´s fastest time for Formula Master in Pau, France, today with a best lap of 1:13.549 on a track still drying from overnight downpours.

ISR's Filip Salaquarda was second fastest with a best time of 1:13.925, whilst Alberto Costa, driving for Cram Competition, claimed the third best time of the morning's free practice session with a best lap of 1:13.993.
